ĠEMMA’s mandate is to inculcate retirement and financial capability – focusing primarily on the following financial capability life skill domains: budgeting, saving, managing debt, preparing for the unexpected, planning for the future, understanding the basic investment framework, and understanding one’s basic consumer rights.
One important education matter is that of making sure that people are familiar with the many scams and frauds that are carried out today and in presenting some knowledge and understanding on how to identify such scam and fraud and what measures a person should take to protect themselves.
In the digital era, the carrying out of traditional scams and fraud has somewhat become more complex for the victim to identify and respond to and somewhat easier for the perpetuator to carry out.
This is where ĠEMMA and the eSkills Malta Foundation coming together will add value. Whilst ĠEMMA primarily focuses on the type of investment and sorts of other scams that seek to defraud, the eSkills Malta Foundation will primarily focus on identifying the basic Internet and technology based measures and skills required to prevent such scams and fraud at the first instance.
ĠEMMA and the eSkills Malta Foundation will jointly carry out education initiatives on digital skills and scams and fraud. They will also work on further parts of the ĠEMMA Little Black Book of scams and frauds to account for new and evolving threats as technology evolves and becomes more pervasive through Smart technologies, Internet of Things, and other emerging technologies.
